Rise of Agon’s 32-bit server shutters September 16

“One era ends, another begins.” Thus opens the newsletter from Darkfall Rise of Agon’s Toxic Rain Studios, as the devs behind the revival of the sandbox MMORPG have put out a major announcement for the project, confirming that the 32-bit client is being sunsetted in favor of its 64-bit client instead.

Readers may recall that this older “legacy” version of the game opened at the top of the year as the devs worked on modernization efforts and a move to Steam. It looks like those efforts have borne enough fruit that the 32-bit Reforged server goes dark on Wednesday, September 16th, while the game’s 64-bit version will enter beta on Wednesday, September 30th. This does, of course, mean that this is effectively a fresh start for everyone, with the only things carrying over being game time, skins, and custom titles.

That said, the 64-bit client not only brings modern technology and some significantly improved visuals, it will also have a variety of new features such as new tutorial islands that players start off in, a three-pronged factional war with territory control and clan-held node vaults to fight over, several late-game mastery tracks for additional class customization, and a host of quality-of-life additions.

“Our aim is to modernize Darkfall while keeping the combat, the freedom, the risk and the large-scale sandbox that made it what it is,” Toxic Rain closes. “This is the first real step in that, with plenty more still to come.”

The September 30th beta will be the penultimate step before Darkfall’s revival makes its way to Steam, with a rough timeline of four to six months for testing. More information, including the promise of a massive 200-page changelog, is set to arrive later. For now, this one is hitting a major milestone as well as a big reset button.
