Good news never seems to come on a weekend afternoon, and so it goes for Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, as Visionary Realms CEO Chris Rowan has penned a letter to fans of the early access sandbox, finally admitting that the team’s attempt at making sweeping updates to combat and character progression have not worked out, and that changes are occurring within the team as a result.
First off, Rowan announced that Robert Crane, who headed the MMORPG’s development of its seasons model, is being hired back as project manager for the game, with a focus on improving development processes. However, Rowan also confirmed that “other areas of the team” had to be “restructured,” meaning that an unspecified number of devs at Visionary Realms have been laid off.
Rowan ultimately shoulders the blame for the dropped ball. “The Combat & Progression Update, Mastery in particular, was an ambitious undertaking. It introduced complexities that our technology and platform tools couldn’t handle appropriately,” he admits. “That gap should have been caught before work started but wasn’t. That is a failure of management. […] In the end, responsibility for the direction of this company, and for the changes we are making, rests with leadership.”
In the immediate future, work on new zones such as Cadia de Bara and Faerthale will continue, as will the “core experiences” of combat, progression, and item changes. Rowan also promises to have an updated roadmap soon and provide more open communication on work behind-the-scenes. “Our goal is to build a development environment that supports reliable progress, an amazing experience, and a game this community can trust and believe in again,” the letter closes.
