Palworld dev just wants to “make fun games” over “maximizing revenue

Palworld remains a rather interesting specimen. It’s grown exponentially since it launched in Early Access in 2024, spawning planned spin-offs, collabs, a card game, a dating sim (maybe), a partnership with Sony, and a lot more, especially as the game has exited said Early Access earlier in the year. But, one thing it’s not is chasing a Fortnite-like model to maximize revenue as quickly as it can.
Speaking to MP1st, John “Bucky” Buckley explained that the studio is working on individual spin-offs, but is not encouraged by maximizing profits. Instead, the team just wants to “make fun games,” as cliche as that sounds.
“Well… I can certainly understand why some people might expect us to take Palworld in that direction, but for us… we just want to make fun games in our own way. I know it sounds a bit cliché, but while we obviously want our games to be successful, maximizing revenue as quickly as possible isn’t what drives our creative decisions.”
Bucky pointed to Palfarm, the upcoming PC exclusive — at least for now — farming sim that, simply put, had features that were better suited for a standalone game rather than lumped into Palworld.
Beyond Palworld and its spin-offs, developer Pocketpair also has its hands in the publishing scene, publishing games such as Dead Take, Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse, Cassette Boy, Windrose, and more.
