However, Aniimo is far from being the only monster-taming game out there. There are plenty of them that are worth trying out if you aren't afraid to delve into the far recesses of the Steam store.

There are older monster-taming titles that are great, and even newer ones that hold their own against Aniimo and even surpass it, so you should check out these games when you are tired of traversing Idyll.

8 Slime Rancher 2

Slime Rancher 2 is one of those games where you don't really need to worry about combat. Instead, it is a creature-taming game that is more relaxed, allowing you to have more fun with exploration.

The world presented in the game is vast, giving you the ability to explore various biomes across a rather massive landscape. Your goal is to capture various slimes and start a farm with them.

You bring them home, place them in containment units, and watch them grow. You can then have them interact with other slimes to create new species. It is a weird science experiment of a game, but one that has a special quirk about it that you may absolutely love.

Are you a fan of Studio Ghibli? If you are, then you absolutely need to check out Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, as the famed animation studio designed the cutscenes and had a major influence over the game's design.

Ni No Kuni places you in the shoes of Oliver — a young boy who travels to a fantasy realm after his mother is taken. As part of the game, you and your human companions can summon familiars to fight in battle.

Of course, the humans in the group can take part in combat as well. It is a cute and whimsical title that is very reminiscent of many of Studio Ghibli's movies, and one that is very memorable.

I am going to point out right away that Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance is not a monster-catching game, but it does qualify as a monster-taming game, as it features monsters that you can create called Spirits, and it allows you to breed and care for them.

Instead of catching the monsters, you collect materials from various enemies you defeat to synthesize your own called Spirits. These Spirits help you in combat throughout the game, allowing you to perform combos and enhance your abilities.

It is a different take on the monster taming mechanic, and it is one that stands out amongst other games that allow you to fight with monsters. Also, Kingdom Hearts is a great franchise that I certainly won't miss out on a chance to add to a list.

I am a big fan of the Monster Hunter series, but I only recently got into the Monster Hunter Stories series with the release of Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. I never even knew this series was about capturing creatures, but I love it.

Imagine if you could fight as/alongside the monsters in the traditional Monster Hunter titles. Well, the Monster Hunter Stories series takes that concept and makes it a reality, allowing you to unlock different monsters and use them in combat.

The combat is very engaging, giving you plenty of abilities and ways to interact with your monsters and companions. Just like in Ni No Kuni, you are going to get in on the action, fighting alongside your monsters. I will point out that the story is also quite engaging full of high stakes and emotional beats, and plays out much more cinematically than Aniimo's.

One of my favorite game series of all time is Final Fantasy, and once upon a time, the series attempted a creature capture title. World of Final Fantasy turned into a strange turn-based creature-capture game that was surprisingly fun and had interesting mechanics.

You play as both Lann and Reynn, and throughout the game, you encounter the various monsters you would normally find in a Final Fantasy title. However, you can capture them as Mirages and use them in future battles.

To go along with this capture mechanic, the combat has a stacking mechanic that allows you to stack the monsters on top of one another, which is something that is charming about the title and lends some additional strategy to combat. Plus, World of Final Fantasy has some major nostalgia, with characters like Cloud, Lightning, and even Sora from Kingdom Hearts making an appearance.

3 The Pokémon Series

Pokémon is easily the most well-known monster-catching series in the world. With numerous games to choose from, it is difficult to pick just one to put on the list, especially when all of them play similarly.

I am the biggest fan of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, but others love Pokémon Black and White, calling those two games the best in the series. You know what you are getting into with Pokémon, and its legacy speaks for itself, as it has become so popular for a reason.

While Aniimo is a strong game, it doesn't yet compare to the most popular monster-catching title of them all. However, it does have the ability to teach the Pokémon franchise a few lessons, thanks to its updated game mechanics that add an additional twist to the formula.

Palworld blew up when it released in early access back in January 2024. It quickly sold millions of copies worldwide, cementing itself as a true competitor to the Pokémon series.

Many praised Palworld for its take on the standard monster-catching gameplay, mixing in survival and base-building game mechanics. Instead of the normal monster-catching gameplay, you are instead thrown into the action by needing to survive in a rather unforgiving world where the Pals will not hesitate to take you out.

Along with this, Palworld allows you to take on its challenge with friends, adding an extra layer to the monster-catching genre that many have been wanting for a long time.

1 Digimon Story Time Stranger

I was a big fan of the Digimon franchise when I was younger, and since then, I have fallen out of it. However, I got back into the franchise when I picked up Digimon Story Time Stranger, and it has been a lot of fun.

Similar to Pokémon, you are able to form a team, but you can fight with multiple Digimon at one time, making the battles more dynamic than standard Pokémon battles. Along with this, you "capture" Digimon by scanning them during fights, allowing you to convert the data into a generated monster.

This title is one of the best monster-catching games to release in recent years, and is one that Aniimo could learn from. It has quickly become a fan favorite and for good reason, demonstrating that even the storied old icons of the genre can still continue to reinvent themselves.
